Glossary of Production Terms

You may not be familiar with all of the lingo used on this site. I will define them here for you. This is not an exhaustive list of terms, I just put new terms here as I use them in blog posts.

(In alphabetical order, I think.)

BPM: a measure of tempo; stands for beats per minute
Chart: handwritten or printed music. Examples include a leadsheet, Nashville Number System chart, or lyric/chord chart
Pre-Production: planning of production prior to recording.
Roadmap: the order of song elements (intro, verse, chorus, bridge, etc.)
Tracking: the recording of individual tracks
Work tape: a rough demo. Usually a guitar/vocal or piano/vocal sung and played into a simple recording device. Now generally digital, they used to be distributed on cassette tape.
